Hiroshima University Researchers Find Fermented Stevia Compound Targets Pancreatic Cancer Cells

Scientists at Hiroshima University have discovered that a compound created by fermenting stevia leaves with Lactobacillus plantarum—a common probiotic found in yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut—can selectively kill pancreatic cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. This finding offers potential hope for developing more effective and less toxic therapies for one of the deadliest types of cancer.

The research, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, identifies the compound as chlorogenic acid methyl ester (CAME). Laboratory tests showed that CAME triggers apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells and inhibits their spread, which are key factors in combating aggressive cancers like pancreatic cancer. Current treatments for pancreatic cancer, such as chemotherapy, often attack both cancerous and healthy cells, leading to significant side effects. In contrast, fermented Stevia Extract demonstrated minimal toxicity toward healthy cells in safety tests, indicating it could offer a safer alternative.

The team refined the fermentation process, finding that optimal conditions occurred when stevia leaves and L. plantarum were fermented together for 72 hours at body temperature in an oxygen-free environment. The resulting extract required significantly lower concentrations to destroy cancer cells compared to unfermented stevia and also showed enhanced antioxidant properties. These antioxidants helped protect healthy cells from oxidative damage in additional experiments.

However, the researchers caution that their work is still in the early stages. The effects of fermented Stevia Extract have only been observed in laboratory-grown cells, which do not fully replicate the complexity of human cancer. Further testing in animals and eventually in humans will be needed to confirm safety and effectiveness. Additional challenges include standardizing the fermentation process and producing consistent batches with reliable levels of CAME for therapeutic use.

This research highlights the value of exploring natural and traditional remedies in the search for new medical breakthroughs. It also challenges the notion that innovation in cancer therapy must always come from high-tech or expensive research. As pancreatic cancer rates continue to rise and treatments remain limited, discoveries like this suggest that answers may sometimes be found in unexpected places, such as the fermentation of a familiar sweetener.

If further studies confirm these promising results, fermented stevia could play a vital role in the fight against pancreatic cancer, providing a low-cost, low-tech solution to a devastating disease.
