Pumpkin seed oil is gaining attention as a natural solution for hair loss, but experts advise caution, especially for individuals with allergies or specific skin conditions.
Research on pumpkin seed oil for hair loss is limited, though some findings are encouraging. "Studies suggest pumpkin seed oil may aid in reducing hair thinning and promoting growth," stated Dr. Cindy Wassef, an assistant professor at Rutgers Health Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The oil is thought to reduce dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with hair follicle thinning, thereby potentially halting hair loss and stimulating regrowth.
Additionally, pumpkin seed oil is rich in vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and linoleic acid, which provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, noted Dr. Shari Lipner, a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian. A trial with 76 men experiencing hair loss demonstrated greater hair growth and patient satisfaction in those treated with pumpkin seed oil compared to a placebo. However, Lipner emphasized that pumpkin seed oil has not been directly compared to officially approved hair loss treatments.
Anyone with known allergies to pumpkins or related plants should consult a physician before using pumpkin seed oil. "Serious allergic reactions or medication interactions could occur," warned Lipner. Additionally, users may experience stomach upset, prompting a need to consult healthcare providers before continuing use.
People with specific skin conditions should be cautious. Dr. Danielle Dubin, a board-certified dermatologist at Mount Sinai, advised that those with seborrheic dermatitis might see symptoms worsen, as the oil could exacerbate yeast-associated conditions. Additionally, individuals with eczema or psoriasis should be wary of potential irritation, redness, or itching.
While pumpkin seed oil might help with mild or early hair loss, individuals with more advanced cases may require treatments like topical minoxidil or prescription medication. "Consulting a dermatologist is essential for developing an effective hair health strategy," emphasized Dubin, especially for those experiencing significant hair loss.
