Across the Atlantic, the situation is different but equally important. The US Food and Drug Administration has determined that red yeast rice products containing more than trace amounts of monacolin K are unapproved new drugs and cannot legally be sold as dietary supplements. For US-market products, the practical implication is that a compliant dietary supplement label should not declare or imply a monacolin K dose, and it must not make cholesterol-lowering claims.
