Green Tea and Vitamin B3: Natural Allies Against Alzheimer’s

2025-09-13

A groundbreaking study from UC Irvine has revealed that two natural compounds, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea and nicotinamide (vitamin B3), can restore energy levels in aging brain cells within 24 hours, potentially reversing Alzheimer’s-related protein accumulation. This discovery highlights a promising, safe, and affordable alternative to expensive and side-effect-laden pharmaceuticals.

Led by biomedical engineer Gregory Brewer, the study demonstrated that EGCG and nicotinamide enhance guanosine triphosphate (GTP) production, reactivating autophagy—the process by which cells clear toxic proteins and damage. In just 16 hours, treated neurons from aged mice achieved energy levels comparable to young neurons and reduced toxic amyloid-beta plaques associated with Alzheimer's.

Unlike high-cost synthetic drugs, these natural compounds are accessible and proven to be safe. EGCG, a powerful antioxidant found in green tea, has been linked to lower dementia risks, while nicotinamide, present in foods such as fish and nuts, offers neuroprotection benefits. Together, these nutrients could offer a drug-free alternative to prevent and reverse cognitive decline.

The study challenges the pharmaceutical monopoly on Alzheimer’s treatment, advocating for nature's healing power. While findings are promising, researchers emphasize the need for further studies to optimize delivery methods for human application, as oral nicotinamide may be less effective due to breakdown in the bloodstream.

This research underscores the potential of natural compounds in combating Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline, suggesting a future where brain health can be maintained without reliance on costly pharmaceutical interventions.
