What Science Says About Artichoke Leaf Extract and Health

Artichoke Leaf Extract is often promoted for its supposed health benefits, such as lowering cholesterol, aiding weight loss, and “cleansing” the liver. However, research shows that while there may be some potential advantages, the evidence is generally limited and inconsistent, and there is not enough proof to support its use for treating specific health conditions.

Possible Health Benefits

1. Supports Liver Health  

Some claims suggest Artichoke Extract “cleanses” the liver. While a few studies indicate that it might help reduce liver inflammation, particularly in adults with fatty liver disease, there is no solid evidence that it can reverse or prevent liver damage, especially damage caused by excessive alcohol. For example, one 2016 study found that 2,700 mg of Artichoke Extract daily reduced liver enzyme levels in adults with advanced fatty liver disease, but more research is needed to confirm these effects.

2. May Lower Blood Pressure  

Reviews of multiple studies show that artichoke supplementation can lead to a meaningful reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure for people with hypertension. The specific way Artichoke Extract affects blood pressure is not clear, and it is also unknown if eating whole artichokes would have the same effect because supplements are much more concentrated.

3. Potential Kidney Function Improvement  

One animal study in 2016 showed that artichoke extract injections restored kidney function in rats with drug-induced kidney disease. However, these results have not been replicated in humans, so any kidney benefits remain unproven for people.

4. Might Aid Weight Loss  

Research in obese rats has suggested that Artichoke Leaf Extract could reverse some symptoms of metabolic syndrome, such as abdominal obesity and high blood sugar. However, there is currently no direct evidence that these benefits apply to humans.

5. May Help Lower Cholesterol  

The effectiveness of artichoke on cholesterol levels remains uncertain, with study results being mixed. Some research suggests the extract might mimic statin drugs by blocking the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production. In one study, overweight adults who took 250 mg of Artichoke Leaf Extract daily saw reduced LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol compared to those given a placebo. Artichoke is also rich in flavonoids, plant compounds that may protect arteries from hardening.

6. Possible Anti-Aging Effects on Skin  

When used in skincare creams, artichoke leaf extract has been associated with reduced inflammation, improved skin blood flow, and less sagging and roughness. In one study, people using artichoke cream saw nearly a 20% improvement in skin roughness and an 11% boost in elasticity compared to a placebo.

Safety and Side Effects

Artichokes are safe as part of a regular diet, and supplement use appears safe for up to 23 months for most adults. Side effects are generally mild and may include gas, bloating, belching, a metallic taste, upset stomach, or diarrhea. People allergic to plants like marigolds and daisies should avoid artichoke supplements due to potential mild allergic reactions.

Dosage and Preparation

There is no standard recommended dose for artichoke leaf extract. Studies have used a wide range of dosages, from 250 mg to 2,700 mg per day. To avoid potential safety risks, never exceed the dosage stated on the product’s label. There have been reports of excessive intake leading to serious complications, such as anemia and liver toxicity.

Who Should Avoid Supplements

Artichoke leaf extract should not be used by children, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those with chronic illnesses unless recommended by a healthcare provider. Discuss any supplement use with your doctor, as safety research on these groups is lacking.
