Tea and Chocolate May Help Lower Blood Pressure

2025-06-16

New research indicates that consuming chocolate and tea could be beneficial for cardiovascular health, thanks to a compound called flavan-3-ols. A recent meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology reviewed 145 randomized controlled trials involving 5,205 participants. These individuals included healthy people as well as those with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

The researchers found that flavan-3-ols, which are also found in grapes, apples, and other fruits, helped lower blood pressure. According to Professor Christian Heiss, a cardiovascular medicine expert from the University of Surrey and a study author, the blood pressure reduction seen in people with hypertension was comparable to that expected from prescription medications. However, for those with normal or low blood pressure, the decrease was much less significant.

Experts are quick to point out that simply drinking tea or eating chocolate is not enough to control blood pressure. Kevin Park, a registered dietitian at Keck Medicine of USC, emphasized the importance of overall lifestyle and dietary changes. He also noted some study limitations, such as the use of single doses of flavan-3-ols and the fact that the research was funded by a for-profit tea company, which could introduce bias.

To potentially see benefits, regular and consistent consumption of flavan-3-ols is recommended. The study suggests that improvements may be observed after four to eight weeks of consumption. Participants generally consumed about 500 to 600 milligrams of flavan-3-ols daily. This amount could be reached with two to three cups of tea, one to two servings of dark chocolate, a few tablespoons of cocoa powder, or two to three apples, as well as a mix of other fruits like grapes, pears, and berries.

Health experts advise consulting a doctor before making significant changes to your diet, especially if you have existing health conditions.
